Do you have a storage unit that you pay a monthly fee for and haven’t seen in months or maybe even years? Are you storing things you no longer need or could replace for much less than the cost you are storing them for?
I have helped many clients clean out storage units they have been paying for – month after month. They usually call me when they start thinking about the investment they have made over the years and aren’t really sure anymore what is even in the unit.
I’ve had clients who have stored items for years thinking their children would “someday” want the items. Many clients conclude, that they have paid thousands of dollars to store the items for years and nobody actually wants them.
One of my clients had a 10 X 10 storage unit they had paid for over two years with a total cost of over $4,800 in storage fees. We sorted through the entire unit and she ended up with two boxes of items she wanted to keep. She was so sad at the money she had wasted on storing items. She also realized in hindsight she could have replaced the items, if she truly needed them, during the two years for much less than what she had paid out in rental costs.
Storage is very useful for short periods of time. I have a storage pod on the side of my house right now, while I am doing a remodel on my house. You get into trouble is when months to turn into years and you end up spending more on storage fees than the items are truly worth. Storage companies love this problem and they make a lot of money from it. Stop and think about what you are storing. Do you truly want to continue to store those items? Are those items more “out of sight and therefore out of mind?”
Look at the space in your home and see where you can take advantage of vertical space for storage. Then take a hard look and decide what you really need to store. Ask yourself “is this worth less than what I will pay in storage fees?”
Use the money you will save on storage costs to take a vacation or do something fun you have always wanted to experience. Memories and experiences cost nothing to store and only take up space in our hearts and minds. This is better than paying for your “stuff” to just sit in a storage facility that you may or may not visit again.
