Think about this, labor is the single largest line item when having your house repainted. The paint itself comprises about 10% of the overall fee. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see that shaving a few dollars off at the front-end may result in having to spend thousands of dollars for a repaint sooner than needed. Ouch. This is why I always encourage you to buy top-shelf exterior paint; it protects your home, looks better longer and saves you from the hassle and cost of repainting sooner than necessary. Totally worth it.
What goes into high quality exterior paint?
Paint consists of three major components; the vehicle (water, oil or a hybrid between the two), the resins and the pigments. Latex, or what we now call water-based paint, was originally designed for exterior application because of the superior expansion and contraction properties – ideal for weather conditions that span from very hot to very cold. Today’s paints are often a combination of different resins that provide durability, adhesion, coverage, plus flow and leveling properties that cheaper paints cannot achieve.
The pigments are another factor that contributes to the performance of the paint itself, not just for the attractive color that it adds to your house. Pigments enhance the durability and life span of the paint. High quality pigments are ground very fine and disperse throughout the paint differently than cheaper ones. This results in color that has better hide, better fade resistance and what we all care about in the long run, better color.
The paint on your house is the barrier between your siding and the elements, and for something that dries down to a few mils thickness, we have very high expectations for it! Have you ever used big, black garbage bags? They are quite durable, but you can still poke a finger through them. House paint is no thicker than that black bag – and that’s what is protecting your home.
Protection and performance are key to any exterior paint application, but color is what drives the selection. I invite you to check out C2 Paint. C2 Paint’s exterior paint is made from 100% acrylic resins and available in 496 full-spectrum colors. You’ll get outstanding covering power, excellent flow and leveling, tenacious adhesion and weathering characteristics that are second to none. In other words, it’s the good stuff.
