On my walk the other day I walked past a storage rental facility and on the window was a sign that said, “Your Car Wants the Garage Back!” Of course they are hoping you clean out your garage and put all your “stuff” in a storage unit at their facility, paying a monthly fee to the facility to store your items for an extended period of time, maybe even for years.
As I thought about what their windows said, I agree with them to an extent. We, as Americans, spend on average $33,250 (stat for 2015) for a vehicle. A large number of us cannot pull our car into our garage due to the garage being too full from items we have taken out of our homes that were cluttering up our living space. Some of the items might even be cardboard boxes we have not had time to break down, toys our children have outgrown or exercise equipment we no longer want.
We store a valuable item, our car (that most of us are still making payments on) out in the cold. Only to have to scrape the windows and run the engine for extended periods of time in the winter to warm up the car before entering to drive it to work or school.
How much are the items you are “storing” in your garage worth and do you really need to hold onto them? Can you clean out your garage, taking advantage of the vertical space on the walls and reclaim the space for your car?
Costco and our local home improvement stores have great racks, hooks, and storage systems that attach to garage walls or ceiling to help leverage available space.
The attached photos are actual pictures of a client’s garage that I just described. He did not want to scrape windows again, he wanted to just jump into his car and go. He knew there were items in his garage that could be sorted, donated and discarded. We could then use the racks he already had to organize and arrange the space so he could fit both of his vehicles back in his garage. From start to finish it took us five hours to organize his two car garage. There was one donation run and one dump run. He was so happy when it was all done and was amazed how fast the process went.
He is now enjoying all the new space he has in his garage and not having to scrape windows. He no longer opens his garage doors and dreads the process of cleaning it out. It is done and in no time at all!
This is the perfect time of year to clean out your garage. It is not too hot and not too cold. And it is right before the winter hits, which make it the perfect time to “Give your Car its Garage Back” without incurring an additional monthly fee of a storage unit. Think about not having to go out and scrape the windows this winter. Doesn’t walking out to your garage, opening your garage door and starting your car sound fabulous?
